Systems Engineering Fundamentals - ON-DEMAND

Available Now!

Description

Today’s complex systems present difficult challenges to develop. From military systems to aircraft to environmental and IT systems, development teams must face the challenges with an arsenal of proven methods. Systems Engineering allows us to take advantage of specialization to help reduce cost and schedule in developing successful systems.

Systems Engineering – Fundamentals ON-DEMAND is a concise and portable pre-recorded series of 6 self-contained modules.  Each module is approximately one hour long and covers the underlying attitudes as well as the process definitions that makeup systems engineering.  The model presented is a research-proven combination of the best existing standards.

This 6-Module course can be played on any browser and is available 24/7/60:  around the clock for 60 days.   You will be able to ask questions of the instructors via email for 90 days from the date of activation.  Activation will occur during normal business hours ET.   The downloadable course slides are yours to keep.

Please see the INSTRUCTIONS near the bottom of this page and the Overview video below.

Who Should Attend:

  • Anyone working in any sort of system development
  • Project leaders or key members in a product development team
  • Anyone looking for practical methods to use today

Course Outline:

Module 1:  Introduction (Systems Engineering Model):  An underlying process model that ties together all of the concepts and methods.

  • System thinking attitudes and view of the systems engineering processes
  • Incremental, concurrent processes, and process loops for iteration
  • The value of Systems Engineering

Module 2:  Requirements (Where Do Requirements Come From?)

  • Requirements as the primary method of measurement and control for systems development
  • Three steps to translate an undefined need into requirements
    • Determining the system purpose/mission from an operational view
    • How to measure system quality, analyzing missions and environments
    • Requirement types, defining functions and requirements

Module 3:  System Architecture (Where Does a Solution Come From?)

  • Designing a system using the best methods know today
  • What is an architecture?
    • System architecting processes
    • Architectural patterns, defining alternative concepts
    • Alternative sources for solutions

Module 4:  Detail Design and Implementation (How to Do Multi-Level Architecture/Design and Implementation?)

  • How to allocate requirements to the system components
  • How to develop, analyze, and test alternatives
  • How to display trade off results and make decisions
  • Establishing an allocated and product baseline

Module 5:  Integration and Test (Ensuring System Quality)

  • Building in quality during the development, and then checking it frequently
  • The relationship between systems engineering and systems testing
  • Technical analysis as a system tool
  • Verification at multiple levels:  architecture, design, product
  • Validation, test planning, DT&E, and OT&E
  • SE role in Operation, Maintenance, and Disposal

Module 6:  Project Technical Leadership (Leadership Throughout the Life Cycle)

  • How to successfully manage the technical aspects of the systems development
  • Planning, controlling, and assessing the technical processes
  • Use of risk management, configuration management, and technical performance measurement
  • How to guide and motivate technical teams; encourage teamwork and virtual, collaborative teams
  • Review of the 6 Modules

Instructor(s):

William “Bill” Fournier is Principal Acquisition Systems Engineering with over 35 years of experience. Mr. Fournier taught DoD Systems Engineering full time for over three years at DSMC/DAU as a Professor of Engineering Management. Mr. Fournier has taught Systems Engineering at least part time for more than the last 25 years. Mr. Fournier holds a MBA and BS Industrial Engineering / Operations Research and is DOORS trained. He is a certified CSEP, CSEP DoD Acquisition, LSS GB and XPMP. He is a contributor to DAU/DSMC, defense contractor internal Systems Engineering Courses and Process, and INCOSE publications. Currently, He Is working for DoD Mission Engineering / Systems Engineering office supporting Space and Missile Defense Programs. Bill has written and assessed ~20 SEP/SEMPs.

Lt Col, USAF (Ret) Frank DiBartolomeo, Jr. retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1999.  He holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering and a Master’s degree in Information Technology.  Frank is also a graduate of Squadron Officer School, the Air Command and Staff College, and the Air War College.

His expertise as an engineer and technical leader in the military and industry led to a variety of leadership assignments as a program manager and senior systems engineer including assignments at the Air Force Research Laboratory, the Pentagon and, in industry, as the Deputy Lead Engineer on a 300-person national security program.

Frank is also an award-winning speaker, Distinguished Toastmaster, and Professional Member of the National Speakers Association.  In his over thirty years in Toastmasters and as a technical speaking coach, Frank has evaluated and coached hundreds of technical speakers.

Both instructors are DAWIA and INCOSE certified.
