Design for EMC

Description

The goal of this three-day course is to prepare electronics design and systems personnel with the necessary information to identify, design and fix EMC (and many closely related Signal Integrity) design problems.  This course addresses emissions, ESD, RFI, power, and self-compatibility.  It focuses on components, Printed Circuit Boards, power electronics, grounding, and shielding and includes over 35 practical design EMC fixes.

We consider SI a special case of EMC and while the design techniques are often the same, the levels can be vastly different. SI deals with millivolt/milliamp levels. – EMC often deals with microvolt/microamp levels. While not an in-depth class on Signal Integrity, this class covers some important basics of SI.

The class is taught by an expert in the field in a practical problem/solution format with minimal math and theory.  It is about design rather than regulations or testing, emphasizing common interference and signal problems faced by the designers of today’s high-speed digital and mixed digital/analog circuits and systems.

Instructor(s):

Daryl Gerke, PE, has worked in the electronics field for over 40 years. He received his BSEE from the University of Nebraska. His experience range includes design and systems engineering with industry leaders like Collins Radio, Sperry Defense Systems, Tektronix, and Intel. Since 1987, he has been involved exclusively with EMI/EMC as a founding partner of Kimmel Gerke Associates, Ltd. Daryl has qualified numerous systems to industrial, commercial, military, medical, vehicular, and related EMI/EMC requirements.

Similar courses

This course will provide an understanding of the basic functions common to every radar system, as well as insight into the signal and data processing requirements and capabilities of those systems. Attendees will receive copies of the presentation along with relevant background publications. (This course replaces the Radar 101 and Radar 201 courses)
